Installing Konica Minolta magicolor 1650 (CF83E1) x86 drivers on x64 system (ntprint.inf)

First, the printer magicolor 1650 is quite noisy since toners are located in something like machine gun (cyclic multi-barrel design). And sure, machine guns are fun, but you wouldn’t expect this sound from the printerJ

It's easy when you smile

Installing any printer (not just this one) on the print server may goes like this:

  • Download official printer drivers
  • Install and configure the default etc.

(Or you can try adding the printer via the Printer Role Interface. However, there are situations where this procedure isn’t working properly. For example: when the driver is somehow bounded into the installer and you are sick and tired of exporting it :-))

So far so good, but what if you are running some older machines? Then you may want to add x86 drivers as well.

The easy way:

  • Find some x86 (W7/Vista) machine log in
    • install printer drivers first
  • Open the printer share \\printserver\Printers
  • Choose the printer, navigate to Properties, Sharing tab and Choose Additional Drivers
  • You should be able to find the printer drivers easily (C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository) sort by last modification date.

The complicated way (aka “you are too lazy to find x86 system”)

  • Extract the driver from the installer

o   For this particular printer we are looking for  “mc1650EN_win7_2k8R2_v1.0.16.0_WHQL.zip”

o   Browse the extracted directory and realize that Win_x86 folder contains files ending with “_” character (*.cn_, *.dl_, *.kp_ …)

o   Run CMD line and expand the files using: expand -R C:\Source\Drivers\Win_x86\ C:/Destination/Drivers

  • Next steps are necessary only if Windows display the following prompt: Install Components from Windows Media, Please provide path to Windows media (x86 processor)
  • Find some x86 install medium (Win7, Vista, WS2008, WS2008R2)
  • Mount it
  • Navigate to Source directory
  • Use 7zip (http://www.7-zip.org/) right click on install.wim ->7zip menu -> open archive
  • Locate \Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository  and look for folder ntprint.inf_x86_* extract it and copy to the print server
  • ‚ÄčWhen asked for Please provide path to Windows media (x86 processor)” use the extracted folder from previous step.
